My Fitness

As either an Active or a Reserve member of the Corps you are responsible for your own personal level of duty fitness. You must take the UNMC's Physical Fitness Test (PFT) at least once a year regardless of your age or assignment to qualify for service. Note that Flight Crews and Special Forces members normally take the PFT quarterly. Note that even when not assigned to Special Forces, maintainance of the qualification (and its associated Special Pays) is dependant upon passing the PFT. The test is based upon the US Army's Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), which is similar to those used in other branchs of service and other national forces. The PFT is a three element test used to assess muscular and cardio respiratory endureance. An alternate test is given to staff with medical conditions that preclude the performance of the standard aerobic event (the 2 mile run). The three standard elements of the PFT are:

Without exception the test sequence as specified above cannot be changed. Participants are allowed not less than 10 minutes, and no more than 20, to recover between each event. The PFT MUST be completed within two hours to be valid.

The PFT is conducted while wearing the PFT uniform. This comprises:

Fitness performance for each PFT event is determined by converting the raw score for each event to a points value. Point scores can be found on the tables for each event, see below. There are three PFT "pass" score categories for testing personnel:

Below the tables for the PFT you will also find guides to your maximum permitted weight and body fat percentages by height, plus conversion charts for those used to working in Imperial or Metric measures. Consult your units Medical Officer (MO) for a more accurate personalised set of guides to your weight and body fat percentage.

Part 1: Push Ups

To make use of this chart, first find the column for your Age Group and Gender, then scroll down until you see the relevant score for your assignment: 50 Ground Crew, 60 Flight Crew, or 80 for Special Forces). Next, go to the column at the far left (red), where you will find the number of push ups you will need to perform to pass this element of the test. For example: If you are Ground Crew, between the ages of 27 and 31 and Female, you must do at least 10 push ups within the required two minutes.

Part 2: Sit Ups

For example: If you are Flight Crew, between the ages of 32 and 36, you must do at least 42 sit ups within the required two minutes. Note that there is no differencial between male and female subjects for this element of the PFT.

Height & Weight Requirements

The two charts below are a guide to what is the maximum permissible weight and body fat percentages by height for members of the UNMC. Check your height in the left hand collum of the chart for your Gender and then move across the rows to the collum for your Age Group to find your maximum permitted weight. Note that for each height there are two specified weight values. The row for Prior is for those with "prior" military service. The other row gives the maximum permitted weight at the conclusion of basic training for civilians entering UNMC service in the post of Specialist. However, by the end of their first tour, they are reclassified as "Prior", after which they are assessed as per all other personnel. The final chart regarding allowable body fat percentages is self explanatory. These figures are just for guidance, and therefore you should consult your units Medical Officer (MO) for a more accurate personalised set of goals.

Your height and weight will be measured while wearing the PFT uniform, but without your shoes. For these measurements you should be standing upon a flat surface with your chin parallel to the floor, in a posture similar to the position of attention. The measurements will be rounded to the nearest inch/pound with the following guidelines:
